How to Prepare for Your Notary Appointment

A notary appointment usually takes just a few minutes — but only if everything is in order before the notary arrives. Here's a simple checklist to make sure your signing goes smoothly the first time.

1. Bring valid, unexpired photo ID

A driver's license, state ID, or passport works in most cases. The name on your ID should generally match the name on the document. If it doesn't — say, due to a recent marriage or legal name change — mention this when booking so it can be addressed ahead of time.

2. Don't sign the document beforehand

This is the most common mix-up. A notary has to witness you signing — if the document is already signed, it typically can't be notarized. Bring it unsigned and sign it in front of the notary.

3. Know if you need witnesses

Some documents — like certain wills and healthcare directives — require witnesses in addition to notarization. Check the document's instructions, or ask when you book, so the right people are present.

4. Have all signers present

If more than one person needs to sign, everyone should be there at the same time with their own valid ID. A notary can't notarize a signature for someone who isn't present.

5. Understand what you're signing

A notary verifies identity and witnesses a signature — they don't explain the legal content of a document. If you have questions about what a document means or does, it's worth reviewing it with an attorney before your appointment.

6. Pick a quiet, well-lit space

For mobile appointments, a kitchen table or desk with good lighting works well. This matters more than it sounds — some documents require careful review of names, dates, and details before signing.
